Their Crystal Fighters garage-funk remix, which I had recently hyped up a bit here, and a new touch up for French two-step producer, Canblaster, which they seem twist into a deep, techy tunnel warp of pitchy synths. As I bite into my freshly made peanut butter & jelly sandwich (nostalgia 101), the beat producer gone house enthusiast sits at his bedside awaiting his 3:00 am slumber while chatting with me about his recent release with San Francisco based label dirtybird, his past involvement with music, and a brief intro into his bedroom production tools.

He goes by the street name B-Ju, and he has also provided us with a downloadable mix featuring all sorts of bits and bops. Full tracklisting after the jump.

How did you get started producing?

When I started making beats, I was realy into scratching. Then when I couldnt afford enough breakbeats records, I started making my own beats.. some shitty 70bpm electro loops. I think that was the beginning…

You started as a beat/hip hop producer right? Why the switch to your more techier style we see on your newest release with dirtybird? how would you label your music now?

Well around 2005 I got my first gigs as a club dj. I realized that i wasn’t really intrested in the same music I produce and I always was intrested in electronic dance music (early detroit techno, chicago house etc.) so it was just a question of time until i produced my own stuff. But i would say that i still have some elements of hip hop in the house music. i like the dirtybird concept. grimey, tradional and fresh at the same time..

I always wondered what was up with your musical background, especially when I tried doing more research after your db release, all I could find were beat type stuff from you, so it always puzzled me.

Ha, yeah I did a lot of dj battles, had dj team, played as a dj in several jazz bands, also with a big band and doing the beat stuff too.

All makes sense now. How did your release with dirtybird come about?

I played my sneakers once or twice in a warmup set and people’s reaction was so good that i send it over to dirtybird without any exception. Honestly, after sending to dirtybird i thought it was kinda stupid sending the track over to such a dope label like dirtybird with all this great producers.i think one week later claude send me a email that he loved the track and the rest is history

I remember hearing it way back in one of claudes sets, initially way before the release had even been set on paper, and it stuck in my head ever since. Then when I could actually put a face to the track, I had to get the full story behind that producer. Besides your musical interest, what other hobbies do you enjoy partaking in?

Ha, thats coo man. I finished my film studies some weeks ago so im really into flicks… actually a real nerd. I also used to write about movies.

What kind of films?

Weird films, Nouvelle Vague, New Wave, German movies from the 70s, Italian Neo Tealism and all that.

What’s your studio setup like?

Not too spectacular…pretty basic stuff, korg synth, I had a fake moog, which is broken now. A lot of software. Two Numark turntables and a Rane mixer. I also use Ableton, Cool Edit, FL Studio and sometimes Cubase.

Favorite software?

puh, maybe Effectrix by Sugar Bytes.

Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Scott Herren, Flying Lotus, Richard David James.

It’s my first time hearing about Ontario young gun Sean Roman, and hopefully it won’t be the last. His single What To Do quickly crept its way into my playlist and now I’m having trouble getting it out of my head.
